Taking care of newly-calved animals is a very important part of keeping and breeding cattle.
The overall health of livestock and further productivity, which constitutes the financial result on the farm, depends on this.
To carry out daily health monitoring of newly-calved cows, the following equipment is required: thermometer, stethoscope, ketone test, a glass for expressing milk, gloves for rectal examination.
Every morning – new section of newly-calved animals
- The cattle care specialist must have a printed list of cows from newly-calved group.
- It is necessary to check the temperature of all cows 0-10 days of lactation – if the temperature is 39.2 ° and above, we inject an antibiotic + ketoprofen, if 38.3 ° and below, we inject calcium preparations subcutaneously, mark it with a wax marker on the right thigh.
- Test the blood for ketosis in all cows of 5-8 days of lactation (every Monday and Thursday).
- Inject the uterotonic drug (Uteroton, Uterodev, Docitol) to all cows in the newly-calved group (every Monday and Thursday).
- Inspect each cow:
- Uterine discharge and/or placental discharge,
- Gusts or swelling of the vulva and/or vagina,
- Check the udder lobes for mastitis if they are hot or swollen. Do not forget to treat the nipples with iodine solution before and after the examination,
- Check stool – use gloves if necessary. Look for loose stools or diarrhea,
- Check the cow for dehydration by checking the condition of the eyes and skin,
- Obvious lameness or a strap on the leg,
- Swelling of the udder – check with your finger. Press down on the udder with your finger. If after 3 seconds the fingerprint does not disappear, this is swelling,
- Check the udder and legs for abscesses,
- Check the udder for woodlice (udder dermatitis),
- Check for nasal discharge,
- Check the ear temperature of cows with saggy ears,
- Listen to the cow’s left side with a stethoscope for left-sided abomasum displacement.
Probe (pump drincher)
- Pump through the probe 40 liters of water + 500 ml of Propylene Glycol to all cows on the 1st day of milking.
- Carry out pumping through the probe 30 liters of water + 300-500 ml of Propylene glycol to all cows on the 2nd day of milking, having excessive body condition (3.75 – 5 points).
- Pump fresh mix to all dehydrated cows.
- Provide for all poorly fed, unhealthy looking cows with ketone body levels ≥ 1.1 mmol / L for 3 consecutive days.
Transfer of animals from the newly-calved section
- Healthy animals that have been in the new cow section for more than 10 days and are not currently being treated and do not have milk withdrawal may be transferred to the milk group.
Accounting for treatment
- All information about the treatment of newly-calved cows should be entered into the computer before the end of the working day.
